繊細さや不安定さ、無垢さをもった少女。
私にはそんな少女が生と死の「あわい（間）」を揺れ動いているように感じられ、惹きつけられて描いているのかもしれません。
また、作中に時折あらわれる生の象徴としての笑いやおふざけは、死と向き合い制作する自身の真面目な部分をどこかで笑っている、あるいは笑って誤魔化そうとしているのかもしれません。
このように私自身も生と死に思いを巡らせながら、その「あわい」を行き来して描いているのかな、と最近感じます。（島﨑良平）
島﨑良平は、浮世絵の伝統的な技法、構図、モチーフ等を歴史に学びつつ、自身の目に映る浮世（憂き世）、日々の生活での気づきや感情、個人的な情欲などを作家ならではのユーモアや見立てなどを含んだ表現で描き出します。近年は「生と死」をより自覚的に意識するようになり、それらに対する実感への渇望が制作動機にもなっているとのことです。生と死のあわいで揺れ動く女體の美しさを表現することを追求し、また、生きているがゆえの刹那的な感情の儚さを噛みしめながらもそれらを笑いに転換することで前向きな気持ちに昇華しています。この機会にぜひご高覧ください。

A girl with delicacy, instability, and innocence.
To me, such a girl seems to waver within “awai” (the space in-between)” between life and death, and perhaps that is what draws me to depict her.
At times, laughter and playful gestures appear in my works as symbols of life. These may, in some sense, be a way of laughing at, or trying to mask the part of my seriousness that I create works with while facing death.
In this way, I recently feel that I paint too while contemplating life and death and moving back and forth through those “awai”.

Ryohei Shimazaki studies the traditional techniques, compositions, and motifs of ukiyo-e from a historical perspective, while depicting the “floating world” (ukiyo / the sorrowful world) as he perceives it, his observations and emotions from daily life, as well as personal desires—through expressions with his own unique humor and metaphors.
In recent years, he has become more consciously aware of “life and death,” and the yearning for a real understanding of those things has become a driving force behind his practice. He continues to pursue the expression of the beauty of the female body wavering within “awai” between life and death, while also transforming the fleeting, ephemeral emotions that arise from being alive into humor, thereby sublimating them into a more positive state of mind.
